CULCOM-seminar - forelesninger med Steven Feld (NB: Nytt klokkeslett)

I samarbeid med CULCOM, arrangerer IMV et seminar torsdag 9. oktober. Professor II Steven Feld\ foreleser kl. 13:15 - 15:00 (NB: Nytt tidspunkt!) i Georg Sverdrups hus, Undervisningsrom\ 3. Tittelen på forelesningen er World Music and the Fundamentalist Phantom:

\

We all know what happened to Salman Rushdie and Theo Van Gogh. Comparatively, pop stars David\ Byrne and Brian Eno got off easy when they turned Koranic recitation into groovy dance music in\ 1981. But little has been revealed of this world music saga and how it connects to so many\ broader questions about appropriation and rhetorics of "free speech" vs censorship. The tale is\ made all the more intriguing by the performance of the story"s central players: the World of\ Islam Trust, London"s Horniman Museum, ethically-challenged folk music collectors and record\ labels, scholars of Islamic recitation, Denmark"s best known ethnomusicologist, an the unknown\ but enduringly popular Lebanese singer he recorded with the help of Iraq"s best-known exiled\ musician. This paper tries to map questions of history and consequence in this still little-known\ story.
