PhD training: Knowledge Aims in Systematic Musicology

Time and place for the course: 10:15-12:00 Tuesdays starting September 29 2020 with 4 sessions spread out during the semester alternating with other PhD events (see updated schedule to be posted on the Musicology PhD web pages).

The Springer Handbook of Systematic Musicology

About the course

Given the diversity of approaches and models of understanding in contemporary systematic musicology, the course shall encourage PhD fellows to become familiar with, and to critically evaluate, the different knowledge aims in the field. The aim of the course is to arrive at a well-informed and well-reasoned epistemological assessment of the PhD fellow's own research in view of the multitude of possible approaches in systematic musicology.

Learning outcomes

  • Become familiar with current trends in systematic musicology.
  • Be able to understand and assess different approaches and epistemological issues in contemporary systematic musicology, including those that may not be used in the PhD fellow's own research.
  • Be able to choose and reason about knowledge aims in the PhD fellow's own research project.

Teaching

  • Reading of curriculum literature, currently the Springer Handbook of Systematic Musicology.
  • Oral presentations of curriculum reading reports to the other course participants.
  • Oral presentations of the PhD fellows' own epistemological reasoning and the final essay.

Assessment

  • Active participation, including presentations and discussions of selected topics in the curriculum and one presentation of the main content of the final essay.
  • Submit a final essay by December 15 2020 of approximately 5000 words which shall give a well-informed and balanced discussion of the knowledge aims and epistemological issues of the PhD fellow's own research.
  • By fulfilling the required active participation and submitting the final essay, the course will give the PhD fellow 5 ECTS points as part of the PhD training component.

Registration

  • The course is open to all PhD fellows in musicology, but also to other interested PhD fellows given the interdisciplinary nature of the course content.
  • Please indicate your intention to participate to the PhD leader, Rolf Inge Godøy, by e-mail to r.i.godoy@imv.uio.no
