New MultiLing affiliate: Cecelia Cutler
A warm welcome to our new MultiLing affiliate, Cecelia Cutler!
Cutler is an Associate Professor at City University New York, Lehman College and The Graduate Center, New York City, USA.
Her research interests include sociolinguistics, language and identity, youth language and hip-hop culture. Her connection to MultiLing is first of all her collaborative work with Unn Røyneland. The two have lead the project Multilingual Youth Practices in Computer-Mediated Communication together, which will culminate in a co-edited volume at Cambridge University Press (2017). The project examines different approaches to the study of youth language in CMC and discusses issues that researchers should consider when analyzing these forms of data. It also showcases the ways in which multilingual youth use their full linguistic repertoires to interact and establish new norms of engagement, possibily leading to language change and shifting attitudes towards dialects and languages.
Cutler’s collaborative work with Røyneland has also included analyses of multilingual youth practices in New Media (NWAV 2011), co-authoring a book chapter on immigrant youth affiliated with hip-hop culture (2015) and co-organizing a workshop with contributors to their co-edited volume.
Cutler has visited MultiLing as a guest researcher several times, the last time in October 2015.
