Language Ideologies, Norms and Normativity

About the project

The objective of this project is to examine the conditions of legitimacy of political processes and decisions determining language norms. To achieve this, different theoretical approaches will be combined. Drawing on philosophy of language, sociolinguistics and political theory, we will ask how general conditions on democratic decision making may be applied in the case of language policy and planning.  In particular, we will look at how, in this area of policy-making, one may determine whether and to what extent such conditions of legitimacy are actually met.
