Academic interests

My research primarily revolves around the the relationship between ethno-social identity and language use in medieval Europe.

More specifically, I investigate the North Sea cultural area from a historical sociolinguistic perspective, with an emphasis on interactions between its Germanic-speaking inhabitants.

By mapping potential variation in mutual intelligibility between early medieval Germanic speech communities via the application of modern theoretical sociolinguistic models and methodologies, my doctoral project seeks to reevaluate multilingual episodes in early medieval vernacular corpora.

Ultimately, my research seeks to contribute to our knowledge of cultural contact between the inhabitants of the North Sea cultural area during the early Middle Ages by reconceptualizing those relations as they appear in historical sources. In so doing, the my research simultaneously sheds light on medieval Germanic-speaking communities' perceptions of the ethnolinguistic relatedness between them.
