This paper is concerned with the syntactic and semantic properties of underspecified adjuncts, i.e. adjuncts without an inherent interpretation. Based on a corpus of non-finite participial clauses in German and English, it is shown that underspecified adjuncts occur with many different adverbial interpretations, modifying all the syntactico-semantic domains of a clause identified in the adjunction-based literature on adverbials, as well as a variety of control readings. The corpus data reveal interesting correlations between the interpretation, distribution and control status of these adjuncts that show how syntax and semantics work compositionally to determine an adjunct’s meaning.

This paper presents a theoretical approach to adjunct control in German and English participial clauses. Based on a corpus study of 1600 non-finite adverbial clauses with a participial head in German and English, we argue that there is a clear correlation between the syntactico-semantic scope of a participial adjunct and its control status: while adjuncts modifying the event generally display obligatory control (OC), adjuncts modifying the matrix proposition or utterance occur with non-obligatory control (NOC). To capture this theoretically, we analyse OC as an upward Agree relation between a matrix argument and PRO, as also suggested in other recent approaches to control. Since this Agree relation can only be established without further ado when the adjunct is in the c-command domain of a matrix argument, OC is restricted to adjuncts in the verbal domain. For adjuncts above T, an NOC relation is established, which is licensed by a salient perceiver or referent that is syntactically encoded in the C-domain. Thus, we argue that the syntactic height of an adjunct is crucial for its control status and that OC and NOC are generally in complementary distribution in adjuncts. However, in contrast to previous work, we suggest that the control relation is established phase-wise, which leaves room for a certain amount of flexibility if the first potential goal is not a suitable controller.

This paper presents a comparative syntactic account of participial adjuncts in German and English. While the typological literature describes German participial adjuncts as much more restricted than their English counterparts both syntactically and semantically, this paper presents empirical evidence that these differences have been exaggerated. Based on a corpus of more than 3000 participial adjuncts, it is argued that these adjuncts have a clause-like internal structure in both languages. Participial adjuncts are analysed as small clauses that can project all the way up to CP level, with a subject that is either phonetically null PRO controlled via Agree or an overt DP that is case licensed either by an element outside the participial clause or through default case. At the same time, the corpus data show that these participial constructions constitute a versatile group of adjuncts when it comes to their argument-structural properties and categorial nature. An analysis couched within the framework of Distributed Morphology is presented that can account for this diversity. This empirically based and theoretically founded account of participial adjuncts contributes to our understanding of the structural possibilities of small clauses cross-linguistically.

This article presents the results of a new corpus-based study of German participle constructions headed by the present participle, focusing on the different adverbial interpretations of these constructions and the interpretation of the implicit subject they contain. The study shows that the German present participle construction can have a wide variety of adverbial readings, ranging from event- and process-related to sentence and speech-act adverbial interpretations. It is argued that there is a correlation between the specific adjunction site of a present participle construction in the so-called middle field and its interpretation. Finally, it is shown that although the implicit subject in these constructions is usually co-referent with the matrix subject, it also allows other antecedents inside or outside the matrix clause.

The syntax and semantics of adverbial present participle constructions in German This article deals with the syntax and semantics of adverbial present participle constructions (PPC) in German. Based on a corpus study of 400 constructions of this type, we show that PPC can have a wide variety of adverbial readings, ranging from event-expanding and event-specifying to sentence and speechact adverbial interpretations. We argue that the interpretation of a PPC is not only dependent on the matrix context in which it occurs, but is also determined by its adjunction site in the so-called middle field. Furthermore, we present evidence that these constructions can be analysed as Small Clauses with a CP structure and a phonetically empty PRO subject. Relying on the criteria for obligatory control (OC) presented in Landau (2013), we show that this PRO subject is usually obligatorily controlled and that this control relation can be syntactically accounted for using an OC-as-Agree analysis.
