Narratology, Seventeenth-Century Literature, 4E Cognition, Predictive Processing, French and Italian Literature.
My project investigates curiosity in 17th-century narratives, with a particular focus on French shorter forms of fiction. From being represented as a character trait to becoming a plot propeller, curiosity as a device for narrative tension accompanied the transition from long novels to shorter novellas, gazettes, or fairy tales, addressed to a new reader attracted to novelty and playfulness. To conduct my analysis, in addition to a close reading of the texts and a lexicographical approach to the concept of curiosity, I adopt cognitive narratology and Predictive Processing to study the reader's navigation of the plot and reception of these texts.
