Many works of Russian literature contain other languages. This talk will consider examples of code-switching and language-mixing in the novels War and Peace (1867) by Leo Tolstoy and Laurus (2012) by Eugene Vodolazkin. Applying recent theory on literary multilingualism, Julie Hansen will discuss the functions and effects of different languages in these texts.
Julie Hansen is Associate Professor of Slavic Languages at Uppsala University and a specialist in comparative literature and Slavic literature. She is the author of the forthcoming monograph Reading Novels Translingually: Twenty-First-Century Case Studies (Academic Studies Press, 2023).
