In February 2024, we marked the tragic second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The attack on Ukrainian cultural identity, along with the looting and destruction of cultural heritage, stands as a crucial aspect of the Russian war strategy. Ukraine's museum and heritage sector has faced significant losses but also demonstrated remarkable resistance and self-organization.
Our speakers — directors and curators of three Ukrainian museums — will share their experiences of preserving and safeguarding cultural heritage in extreme circumstances. In conversation with Dr. Lars Rowe, they will reflect on the changing role of museums amidst the war, focusing on the evolving mission to document unfolding history under fire and support affected communities. The event will include short presentations, panel discussions, and a Q&A session. After the discussion, we will screen the documentary about the WWII Museum's expedition to the Kharkiv region shortly after its de-occupation in autumn 2022.
