Karin Kukkonen, Laura Otis and Marco Bernini will present their work on creativity in a workshop arranged by the Narrative and Cognition Lab.

Manuscripts bear the traces of the creative processes that played out on their pages. In this talk, Kukkonen will discuss how we can use what is known about the material and embodied dimension of cognition to shed light on manuscripts. We only have the final, fair copy manuscripts for Charlotte Brontë’s novels, but the manuscripts she wrote as a child and adolescent in microscript (called the “little books”), what we know about publishing practices in the period as well as the final texts themselves, can help us construct a rich account of how Charlotte Brontë wrote Jane Eyre, Shirley and Villette.

The talk will take place on 13 June at Durham University (Tom Percival Annexe) and on Zoom. On 12 June, Karin Kukkonen and Laura Otis will reflect on their interdisciplinary careers in conversation with Marco Bernini.
