About the workshop

In late seventeenth-century France, fairy tales emerged as storytelling games played at court and in Parisian salons. Madame de Sévigné describes in her correspondence the fashionably vogue of “mitonner”, that is, entertaining one another by weaving elaborate tales full of marvels, magic characters, and fantastic scenarios. Madame d’Aulnoy’s volumes of fairy tales, moreover, often stage these fictional groups of salonniers prompting each other to improvise tales, or even to retell stories they heard directly from a fairy…

In this interactive workshop, we will recreate that spirit of collective narrative invention using a twentieth-century fairy-tale-inspired jeu de l’oie (game of the goose). The characters, places, and magical objects drawn from classical seventeenth-century French tales (like Bluebeard, Cinderella or The Beauty and the Beast, for example) will provide prompts for us to create (or retell) stories together.

No preparation or prior knowledge is needed: just bring your imagination and curiosity!
