Academic interests

Maria Cristina Manzetti is a Roman landscape archaeologist specialised in digital technologies for Cultural Heritage. Her current research project ""Exploring the Mediterranean Cultural Narrative According to 18th-Century European Travellers" focuses on the investigation of the impressions European travellers had of the material heritage of the they visited in the Mediterranean (in particular Sicily, Greece, and Cyprus) during the Grand Tour.

The aim is to understand if the emotional impact caused by the material heritage, and more in general by Mediterranean places, played a role in shaping a European identity. She has close-read twenty-one travelogues written by travellers coming from different European countries between the second half of the seventeenth and the end of the eighteenth centuries. A digital deep map has been created in order to facilitate comparative analysis of travellers' impressions of Sicily, Greece, and Cyprus.

Manzetti is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cyprus.

Manzetti's time at the institute will be used for bibliographical research and for writing her first book.
