In this seminar, our Scholar in Residence Gunnar Liestøl, professor of media  studies at the University of Oslo, presents his work on situated simulations (sitsim) and their use in the understanding of ancient history. In a situated simulation two elements are linked: the user's visual perception of the real physical environment, and the user's visual perception of a 3D graphics environment as displayed on a hand-held screen. This new technology makes use of GPS, accelerometer and electronic compass which enable us to use a mobile phone as a window towards other versions of reality, for example in visualisation of the ancient past.

The talk gives an introduction to location–based media and Augmented Reality (AR) and how it has been deployed in archaeology dissemination and cultural heritage communication. It further discuss how AR may be used with motion capture to reconstruct and simulate historical actions and events. Finally, it presents the media design method and plans for a reenactment of the assassination of Julius Caesar in Pompey's Curia.

The Director's Seminar Series at The Norwegian Institute in Rome is open for everyone interested. Kindly register your participation to events@roma.uio.no.

Participants are invited for an aperitivo immediately after the seminar.
