The ship burial from Oseberg, Norway / a Roman tomb at Hierapolis, Turkey, submerged by travertine.

Visiting researchers and archaeologists Irene Selsvold (University of Gothenburg) and Frida Espolin Norstein (University of Stockholm) present new perspectives on burial practices in the ancient world. Burial practices are central for identifying, analysing, and interpreting change in past societies. Recent theoretical discussions in archaeology have affected how we approach societal change in the past. In this talk they discuss ways burials can and have been used as sources to societal change in transition periods with examples from Viking Age Scandinavia and Late Antique Asia Minor.

The Director's Seminar Series at The Norwegian Institute in Rome is open for everyone interested. Kindly register your participation to events@roma.uio.no.

Participants are invited for an aperitivo immediately after the seminar.
