About the presentation

Several episodes from the life of Saint Catherine of Alexandria decorate the western wall of the Castiglione chapel in San Clemente. The frescoes were produced during the second quarter of the fifteenth century, as one of the first major artistic projects after the return of the papal curia to Rome from Avignon. The virgin martyr is shown as a rational and competent rhetorician in the frescoes by Masolino de Panicale. This presentation will describe the context of the production of the artwork, the role of Saint Catherine in late medieval Europe, and discuss what the fresco might have communicated to its intended audience.

Tuva is the recipient of a scholarship from the Ella and Eystein Magnus' Legat, enabling her to work on her MA project in art history in Rome this autumn.

MA students and early-career researchers are welcome to undertake research stays at the Institute. Students, researchers and staff from partner institutions are offered extended access to the Institute and its library collections. It is also possible to apply for funding through the Ella and Eystein Magnus Grant or the Institute’s scholarship.
