How did the sacralization of political symbols in Mussolini’s Italy during the regime’s second phase (1925 –35) and in Saparmurat Niyazov’s Turkmenistan (1991–2006) contribute to the construction of a new national identity?
This bachelor thesis project examines how Benito Mussolini in Italy and Saparmurat Niyazov in Turkmenistan used nationalist means to achieve their ideological goals.
The examination’s purpose is not to equate the ideological content of the two regimes, but rather to highlight similarities and differences in their mechanisms of rule and strategies of legitimation across distinct historical contexts.
A comparison between the post-Soviet context and Fascist Italy offers a fresh perspective on whether the sacralization of politics should be seen as a feature specific to the totalitarian ideologies of the Interwar Period, or rather as a more universal phenomenon that recurs across diverse historical and cultural contexts.
