The Donation of Constantine – the notion that Emperor Constantine the Great gave Pope Sylvester I the rights over Rome – was a potent weapon in the arsenal of church reformers in the High Middle Ages. The story of the Donation also spread to Scandinavia, where it was received and interpreted according to local ideals of ecclesiastical liberty and righteous kingship. The seminar examines this reception, drawing on evidence from twelfth-century Denmark, Norway, and Iceland.
