Internship at PRIO

I really appreciated the possibilities for networking and meetings with lots of like-minded people, who were happy to share, have discussions, and generate new ideas, says Svitlana.

What tasks did you perform during your internship?

- I participated in many different tasks at PRIO, which has given me various interesting experiences - both academic and more practical. Here are some examples:

For the CONMIG project:
The CONMIG project (Geographies of Conflict-Induced Migration) employs mixed-methods to understand how different forms of violence and levels of intensity affect forced migration, and to where individuals are likely to flee

Assisting with planning and running of 1-2 events/PRIO seminars:

  • The first one focused on refugees from South Sudan in Uganda – and their experiences, past, future, e.g. in collaboration with organisation working with refugees in Uganda also based on Oslo + members of the South Sudanese diaspora in Oslo.

  • The second event was on Ukraine and it was very important for me for obvious reasons. It took us about three months to plan it and it resulted in a great event.
    Article about the event (prio.org)
  • I pariticapted in literature review work on the CONMIG themes in cooperation with the team. Assisting with miscellaneous tasks (e.g. working with references on draft articles, etc.) Experience and exposure with various research related tasks, including registration of literature in the reference software EndNote and helping with “cleaning survey data” and with file management on other research projects.

  • Assisting as needed in tasks in collaboration with colleagues in Oslo and Uganda (e.g. blog post, policy brief etc.) Also assisting with other administrative tasks, from organizing seminars to helping with workshop organization.
  • Tasks supporting the PRIO Migration centre:
  • Participating and as needed assisting with weekly lunchtime seminar on Thursdays. As needed setting up and assisting with Teams functions for hybrid meetings.
  • Assisting with registering publications and news on the webpage, and assisting with a newsletter
  • Other possible events to join at PRIO:
  • Participation in seminars at PRIO – external as well as internal ones
  • Participation in internal “professional development brownbags”
  • Participation in the PRIO forum for Masters students and Research Assistants (monthly meetings)
  • Social events like e.g. cake parties etc.

How did you use skills you have acquired from your education at the Faculty of Humanities?

– I could easily see the direct application of the skills and competencies from my studies in the work I performed at PRIO. Especially helpful was the skills achieved on the project-based research course MULTI4150 – Project-based Research in Multilingualism

What do you think is or was the greatest benefit from your internship?

– I really appreciated the possibilities for networking and meetings with lots of like-minded people, who were happy to share, have discussions, and generate new ideas.

Anything else you would like to add?

– It is always a good idea to find an opportunity to visit the institution where you would like to spend your internship in-person because emails take too long time.
