What tasks did you perform during your internship?
– In Utrop I was writing many different types of articles and was almost completely free to write whatever I wanted. Some days I was asked to write a quote or two, which meant both relaying on information from other major, and foreign, news channels, but also double-checking the information. Other days I organized, and completed, interviews with individuals I thought were interesting for Utrop's portraits in addition to attending events such as film screenings and panels.
How did you use skills you have acquired from your education at the Faculty of Humanities?
– It was incredibly beneficial to bring the knowledge I have gained over the past year in Gender Studies into the internship. In journalism, a broader and more comprehensive view of society is always useful, but I noticed that specifically in Utrop, Norway's first multicultural newspaper, it helped me a lot to have the perspectives of Sara Ahmed, Lena Gunnarsson and Kimberlé Crenshaw in the back of my mind. That way, I could use theory where I lacked personal experience both when it came to writing the stories themselves, but also to create a safe and open atmosphere during interviews.
What do you think is or was the greatest benefit from your internship?
– What was most beneficial to me was that my time at Utrop helped me confirm that society really needs subjects like Gender Studies that can help us create more understanding for each other. In other words, I feel even more secure and confident in my choice to do a Master's in Gender Studies.
Anything else you would like to add?
– I can definitely recommend combining journalism and Gender Studies!
