Discovering the key stakeholders in the cultural sector and observing the entire process behind the completion of a project has proven to be an immensely gratifying experience, says Marie-Kristin.

What tasks did you perform during your internship?

– I carried out a variety of different tasks during my time in the cultural department. From writing e-mails, posting, setting up the event space, researching authors and their works or watching trailers and writing descriptive texts – it was a bit of everything. I worked with social media and content management systems, researched different topics to coordinate social media content and wrote different kinds of texts for different formats. Besides that, I was involved in organising the film festival Tyske Filmdager which took place during the last week of my internship.

How did you use skills you have acquired from your education at the Faculty of Humanities?

– I noticed how much my way of working, specifically analysing problems, looking at things from a different perspective and asking questions is informed by my studies and the texts I have read and written in the past semesters. Especially the analytical lens that Gender Studies provided me with and the ability to see a problem through and expect certain outcomes has been a major advantage for me personally.

What do you think is or was the greatest benefit from your internship?

– Not only could I use my native German skills and combine them with my acquired Norwegian, but I also got a glimpse into the cultural sector in Oslo and Norway. To learn who the partners and important players are, how everything is connected and how a project comes to life from start to finish, has been incredibly rewarding to see.

Anything else you would like to add?

– My internship took place over the span of 3 months, full-time. Before I accepted this position, I was unsure of the workload especially since I also had to start my thesis. So, my advice would be to really weigh the odds and decide what is more worth it in the long run and what opportunities you don’t think you can pass on. Besides that, my advice is to go all in! I had the opportunity to take part in a lot of different events (film screenings, literature events, concerts, exhibition openings…) and I tried to do as much as I could, which really paid off. I learned and experienced a lot and met some very nice and interesting people along the way!
