Religion and Ecology in the Classroom: Lynn White’s 1967 Article as a Didactic Instrument
For this seminar we read the 1967 article “The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic Crisis” by the American historian Lynn White, Jr (see link). This article can arguably be regarded as the foundational document of the “religion and ecology” field of research. In this talk, Andrea Rota, Professor of Study of Religion, UiO, will discuss the reception of White’s article in different social, religious, and academic contexts and examine how it can be read as the starting point for a number of research questions and concerns that extend into the present day. In this regard, he will argue that White’s article can serve as a didactic instrument for introducing students to a number of topics and debates.
After the talk there will be plenty of time for Q&A and for further discussions of White’s article.
