Along with Associate Professor Marco Bernini from Durham University and Professor Michael Wheeler from University of Stirling, Karin explored how environments are imagined, remembered, and inhabited in the Workshop "Cognitive Aesthetics of Place." The workshop occurred June 9th 2025, and was organised by the Centre for Memory and Place at Stirling University together with the Philosophy Department at the University of Edinburgh.
Karin's presentation was called "Memory, Imagination and the Stacked Ecologies of the Beach Read." The beach read is a yearly ritual, publishers promote books for reading on the beach, and readers individually and collectively select their books for the occasion. Readers’ memory of place, their memory of reading experiences and the embodied experience of reading on the space of the beach intersect. Karin discussed Sara Stridsberg’s recent novel Farewell to Panic Beach (2025), and the experience of reading it on a beach.
Karin also presented on the project at the 2025 Cognitive Futures conference “Cognitive Tools in Action”, in her paper “Stacked Ecologies on the Beach”.
