Carnivalesque oil

In the latest issue of the art magazine Metode, Miriam Sentler contributes an essay about the traditional Up Helly Aa festival in Shetland. In her text, Sentler explores how the Islands’ 1970s oil culture was met by frolicsome cultural displays and acts.

TOIL fellow Miriam Sentler's contribution was selected to feature in the thematic issue Currents, which was created in collaboration between Metode and the Lofoten International Art Festival. In the essay How to Act on Oil, the researcher and artist writes about her personal encounter with Shetland's Up Helly Aa festival in January 2024. Sentler also refers to captivating archive material from the 1970s in her text. Using Mikhail Bakhtin's theories about carnival, she discusses a peculiar form of  theatrical revue; so-called "energy acts" dating from the early establishment of the oil industry in Shetland.

The launch of Metode’s third volume took place at ROM in Maridalsveien (Oslo) on Thursday, February 13th.

BBC Radio Shetland broadcasted a short interview with Sentler that same afternoon, in which she had the opportunity to talk about another part of her doctoral project.
