Extended deadline and additional semester

The master's programmes at HF are standardised to two years (four semesters) on a full-time basis. Here you find out what you can do if you fall behind with your master's thesis.

Extended deadline within the current semester

An extension of up to two weeks beyond the ordinary submission deadline may be granted.

An extended deadline is only granted in special circumstances, primarily in cases of documented illness during the four weeks preceding the submission deadline. Long-term illness may also provide grounds for an extended submission deadline.

Under normal circumstances, you are not entitled to supervision after the ordinary submission deadline.

To apply for an extended submission deadline in the current semester, you must complete the application form and attach the necessary documentation. Applications for an extension due to illness require a medical certificate documenting the period affected, the extent to which your capacity to work or study has been reduced, as well as the date and signature of the treating practitioner. The department will reject the application if the documentation is incomplete or fail to meet the criteria.

You can find the application form and more information about valid absences that qualify for a short extension here.

Please contact the administration if you have any questions regarding an extended deadline in the current semester.

Extra semester

If you are delayed in your studies and you are unable to complete and submit the master’s thesis within the deadline determined by the department, you may apply for an extra semester. In the application you must upload confirmation from your supervisor showing that they support your application. You may also be asked to upload a work schedule for completion of master´s thesis. The application will be processed by the department where you are studying.

If you do not apply for an extra semester in order to complete your master thesis or if your application for an extra semester is not approved, your right to study will be revoked and all formal contact with your supervisor will cease.

Final semester

If, however, one additional term is not sufficient, you may apply for one final semester. In the application you must upload confirmation from your supervisor showing that they support your application. You may also be asked to upload a work schedule for completion of master´s thesis. The application will be processed by the department where you are studying.

If you are sick for the entire or the majority of the semester, the usual guidelines for leave applies.

Apply for a final semester in your graduate studies.

If you do not apply for a final semester in order to complete your master thesis, if your application for a final semester is not approved or if you are unable to complete the master thesis by the deadline during that final semester, your right to study will be revoked and all formal contact with your supervisor will cease.
