Background
Dr Anna Chebotarova is a sociologist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Oslo. She completed her PhD in Area Studies at the University of Oslo in 2025 with the dissertation “Fading Ambivalence, Mounting Uncertainty: Societal Unity and Belonging in Wartime Ukraine.” The project was conducted within the Research Council of Norway–funded project National Values and Political Reforms in Post-Maidan Ukraine (VALREF) under the supervision of Prof. Geir Flikke and Prof. Tor Bukkvoll. Her doctoral research examined societal cohesion and transformations of belonging in contemporary Ukraine, with particular attention to wartime dynamics and involuntary displacement.
She is currently a researcher at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), where she contributes to the project “From Ability to Defend to Willingness to Defend – What Can Norway Learn from Ukraine?” Her previous appointments include research and coordination positions at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland) and the Centre for Urban History in East-Central Europe (Lviv, Ukraine). Dr Chebotarova holds an MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Central European University (Budapest, Hungary).
At ILOS UiO, she teaches courses on Ukrainian language, history, culture, and society, as well as research methodology in Area Studies. Her work bridges sociology, history, and area studies, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods with an interdisciplinary approach.
