A Comprehensive Norwegian-Russian Dictionary (NRD) is being compiled by a team headed by Professor Valery Berkov. In this paper the author describes certain problems connected with the grammatical information accompanying the Russian equivalents in this project. The V. Berkov´s Russian-Norwegian Dictionary applies a code system devised by A. A. Zaliznyak. The codes are attached to the Russian lemmas and refer to a large dictionary grammar included as an appendix. Such a system tends to be more distracting for the user when the codes are attached to the equivalents in a bilingual dictionary. Furthermore, it is desirable to cut such coding down to a minimum to secure economy of space. By adopting diasystematic marking that presupposes elementary knowledge of Russian grammar and thus omits labelling of regularly inflected words, two aims would be attained: economy of space and more effective signals to the user as to what is regular or not (no code: here you ought to be able to deduce the inflection etc. from the form; a code: look out for an irregularity!). A survey carried out among some groups of probable users of the NRD revealed that those acquainted with and used to the coding in the RND have a conservative attitude to any changes in the Zaliznyak system. This will be considered in the final solution adopted for coding in the NRD.

Aimed equally at general, professional and academic users from either language area, the dictionary contains about 50,000 entries. It includes idioms, proverbs, archaic and poetic diction, slang and technical and specialized terms from a wide range of fields. Besides purely lexicographical definitions, all Russian head-words and their Icelandic equivalents are accompanied by information about their individual grammatical characteristics. Symbols used with all entries refer to specific paradigms in the detailed grammars of the two languages, which are included in the appendix. The dictionary has a strong encyclopaedic element. A substantial appendix contains reference material on the member republics, governmental structure, educational system and military organization of the the Russian Federation and the former Soviet Union, and on the hierachy of titles and ranks in prerevolutionary Russia. A list of common Russian family names is also included. The linguistic section of the appendix contains a list of conventions for Cyrillic transliterations, detailed explanations of Russian phonology and grammar, tables of inflections, Icelandic phonology and tailored dictionary grammar. Clánek prinási mimo jiné prehled ceské literatury v knihovnách v Reykjavíku a odhaduje historicky dopad situace, o které tyto údaje svedcí.

Problems of Dictionary Grammar. The Zaliznyak solution: A boon or a burden?
Show summary
In this paper the author discusses the necessity of dictionary grammars
in (bilingual) dictionaries and assesses some of the existing
dictionary grammars. He points out that a dictionary grammar has two
main purposes: a) to give an organized, integrated view of the grammar
of the language in question, and b) to economize space in the
dictionary proper by equipping the lemmas and the equivalents with
codes referring to the dictionary grammar. His main concern is: How
sophisticated and economizing can such a code system be without
representing a serious handicap for the common user? He demonstrates
this dilemma by analyzing the code system for Russian devised by A. A.
Zaliznyak. As this system has been widely used, it offers a good basis
for a study of the actual question.

Plasshensyn i tospråklige ordbøker.
Show summary
The maximum of information in a minimum of space is a natural goal in a
bilingual dictionary such as H. Haraldsson's Russian-Icelandic
Dictionary (RID: to appear in 1995 or early 1996). Gradually, various
methods have been developed to reach this goal, some of which can be
seen in V. Berkov's Russian-Norwegian Dictionary of 1987 (rev. ed.
1994). In this paper, the author describes the methods used in RID to
save space and condense information. He shows that among other things,
precious space can be saved by means of a careful analysis of the
semantics, distribution and stylistic value of synomyms.

Islandsk grammatikk i tospråklige ordbøker.
Show summary
In a bilingual dictionary provided with a dictionary grammar referred to by means of morphological codes in the entries, it is desirable that the codes should be "transparent". That is to say, after some training the user should be able to interpret the information contained in the codes he sees, without having to consult the particular part of the grammar referred to. The first complete dictionary grammar of Icelandic in a bilingual dictionary appeared in the Swedish-Icelandic dictionary of 1982. However, the morphological codes used in that dictionary can hardly be assessed as transparent. In this paper, the author describes the system of codes he has devised for the Icelandic equivalents (nouns, adjectives, verbs) in his Russian-Icelandic dictionary which is expected to be published at the end of 1995 or beginning of 1996. This system has partly been inspired by the system of codes devised by A. Zaliznyak, which the author applied to the Russian entries in his above-mentioned dictionary. This system is known from e.g. the Russian-Swedish dictionary of 1976 and the Russian-Norwegian dictionary of 1987 (rev.ed. 1994)
