Berenike Herrmann (Bielefeld): “Creativity in Spatial Descriptions in Fictional and Non-fictional Prose. On Using LLMs as a Judge”
It is a commonplace that literary prose is loaded with creativity. Think of Kafka’s Metamorphosis (1915), where one morning, a very normal salesman finds himself transformed into an “enormous bug” (Ger. ‘ungeheures Ungeziefer). Or consider a metaphorical description of a person such as “His hair was that special mad yellow, like an omelette” from Martin Amis’ novel Money (1984). Creativity in literary prose comes in many shapes, and it does so at the levels of both content and style.
This talk focuses on the second type of creativity, in style. Understanding creativity as originality and meaningfulness of language use, I will ask two questions: Firstly, what role do metaphors play when judging creativity in spatial descriptions across literary and non-literary genres. Secondly, do human and ‘AI’ judges differ in their assessment of creativity by genre? I will report experiments conducted within the research project A05 “Contextualised metrics of linguistic creativity in literary and non-literary text” at the CRC “Linguistic Creativity in Communication” at Bielefeld University, where we have developed metrics to assess the creativity of text with a focus on metaphor and spatial descriptions found in narrative texts across fictional and non-fictional texts.
