To search the OMC using Glossa 2 you start by selecting Subcorpus (i.e. Database in the screenshots below).

The abbreviations indicate which languages each sub-corpus contains.

Under Translation? (Translated in the screenshots below), select 'n' (for original/non-translated text only) or or 'y' (for translated texts only). If you do not select ‘y’ or ‘n’, the search hits will come from both original and translated texts.

Then enter the word(s) you want to search for, e.g. finnes. The simple search option is illustrated below, using a balanced and fixed sub-corpus: the fiction part of The English-Norwegian Parallel Corpus (ENPC-fiction).

1. Select Subcorpus (Database) in the drop-down menu to the left:

The word "Enpc-fiction" is marked with blue color in the drop down menu.

2. Select original text under "Translated" + "n":

In the drop down menu to the left, the phrase "enpc-fiction" is chosen in the category "Database". The letter "n" is chosen in the category "Translated" .

3. Search for finnes in Norwegian original texts:

The word "finnes" is written in the search field.

4. Select "Add language: English" to display English translations of Norwegian sentences with finnes:

A red ring marks the button "Add language"

5. Press "search" to display parallel concordance lines:

  • In addition to the key-word-in-context, the number of hits is displayed above the concordance lines and the corpus text identifiers are displayed in the column to the left (click on the ID to get more information about the individual texts).
A red ring around the green "search" button. To red arrow pointing at the concordance line and the corpus text identifiers.

6. You can specify that a word has to be present in the other language, e.g. exist in English when the search word is Norwegian "finnes".

The word "exist" and the word "finnes" is written in the search windows.

7. Or you can specify that a word is not present in the aligned sentences by ticking the "Exlude this phrase" box.

A red arrow pointing at ticking the "Exclude this phrase" box.

8. Other simple search options:

  • Follow the above procedure to search in English original texts with Norwegian translations, Norwegian translated texts with English source texts (original) and English translated texts with Norwegian source texts. (For more information on the English-Norwegian Parallel Corpus, see the ENPC home page.)
  • There are various sorting options: corpus position is default, but e.g. left and right context can be chosen in the drop-down menu (Sort by position) above the concordance lines.
  • You can download and save the the search / concordance lines in e.g. Excel format by pressing the Download button.
  • Other sub-corpora (databases) of the OMC and other language combinations can be searched in the same way. (Use the "Add language" function - see point (4) above - to add more languages in sub-corpora with more than two languages.) NB! Not all languages have translations into all the other languages. (See the overview of OMC sub-corpora.)
  • Other search options, using the drop-down menus to the left, include: search individual texts (Text ID), publication date, individual authors, etc.
  • The "reset form" button is useful to make sure you start a new search from scratch.
  • For advanced searches, see the Extended Search Guidelines.
