This brief talk concerns offprints, an often overlooked or obsolete type of publication, and their potential as fantastic, even essential, tools for the understanding of the history of an academic institution. The Norwegian Institute of Rome’s library contains thousands of offprints, either given as gifts by preeminent scholars to our founders H.P. L’Orange and Ejnar Dyggve, or collected by other important donors for their unique subject matter. These short publications, ranging from the late nineteenth century to the present day, reveal a more intimate side of the institute, illuminating the relationships formed between scholars of all nations and all disciplines.
Grace Kendall is currently an assistant in the library at the Norwegian Institute of Rome. This short project will culminate in the first of three digitization projects, funded by the Centre for Digital Development (HUMIT) at the University of Oslo.
