Archive

The archive of the Norwegian Institute in Rome documents the history of the institute, its scholars, and twentieth-century Norwegian scholarship and fieldwork abroad. It consists of two main components: the Historical Archive of the Institute and the Photographic Archive.

On a table is a brown, older box for photographs that say in Italian: "Ferrania. Loading Cappeli". All around are black and white photographs.

Historical Archive of the Institute

The Historical Archive of the Institute preserves the administrative and historical records of the Norwegian Institute in Rome. The holdings document the Institute’s founding, governance, research projects, expeditions, teaching activities, and international collaborations from the early twentieth century to the present.

The archive includes:

  • administrative records
  • correspondence
  • project documentation
  • reports and internal publications

Photographic Archive

The photographic archive preserves over 6000 photographic items, including prints, glass plate negatives, glass slides, albums, and early photographic materials. The core of the collection consists of photographs produced during research projects directed by Hans Peter L’Orange, Hjalmar Torp, and Einar Dyggve in Italy and the Mediterranean between the 1930s and 1950s. The archive documents monuments, excavations, and works of art in Italy, Greece, and the wider Mediterranean area.

A digital selection of the collection is available through the Alvin Platform for digital collections and digitised cultural heritage.

PDF versions of the photographic archive’s inventories are available here:

The Photographic Archive is part of Censimento delle raccolte fotografiche in Italia
