About doctoral research fellowships

To be able to apply for a doctoral research fellowship at the Faculty of Humanities, one or more vacant positions must have been advertised.

The fellowships are linked to an academic subject/field, project or unit, and are advertised by the relevant department.

See vacant academic positions at the Faculty of Humanities

Doctoral research fellowships at the Faculty are normally awarded for a period of three years without teaching duties.

Research fellows may apply for a completion grant if they submit their dissertation within the prescribed time limit. The grant offers an extension of employment after the dissertation has been submitted.

How to apply

Before you apply for a research fellowship, it is important that you read the advertisement carefully. It will state what the application must contain, how the application should be submitted and the application deadline.

An application must contain:

  • completed application form
  • project description prepared in accordance with
  • CV
  • if applicable, a list of published and unpublished work
  • copies of relevant diplomas/transcripts and certificates (to be submitted upon request)

You apply without a formal relationship with, and without approval from, a supervisor. Supervisors are appointed upon admission.

Admission requirements

For admission to the PhD programme, the following is required:

  • You have completed at least five years of higher education, i.e. a Master’s degree or equivalent. In special cases, the Faculty may grant admission on the basis of a one-year Master’s degree, following an assessment of the study programme’s scope and quality.
  • You have completed the Master’s degree (or equivalent) and the final evaluation is available at the time of application. It is not possible to submit diplomas and certificates after the deadline.
  • You have a good command of written and spoken English. Read more about language requirements.

Assessment of applications

High standards are set for both your qualifications and the quality and relevance of the PhD project. The applications are assessed on the basis of:

  • Suitability: The applicant’s academic background and grades, progression of study, time elapsed since the final examination, and relevant academic activity.
  • Project quality: The project’s scientific quality, research-related interest and innovation, relevance for the research community at the Faculty of Humanities, connection with academic networks outside the Faculty, and feasibility within the framework of the PhD programme and the research fellowship.

The various bodies involved in the process make academically strategic assessments and set priorities when ranking applicants and nominating candidates for fellowships. The nomination committees may conduct interviews.

The assessments are exempt from public access and will not be sent to the applicant.

Start of employment

After the appointment has been made, you and the department agree on a starting date. Normally you will start after the period of notice in your previous position has expired, and within three months.

If you wish to start later, you must apply for a postponed starting date. The advertisement for the research fellowship may stipulate a latest possible starting date for the position.
