Conferment ceremony
After the trial lecture(s) and defence, the evaluation committee submits its approval of these to the faculty. On the basis of this approval, the rector confers the degree of philosophiae doctor (PhD) or doctor philosophiae on the candidate.
The University holds conferment ceremonies four times a year, where the deans present the faculties’ doctoral candidates and diplomas are awarded. The Division for Communication and Public Affairs ensures that the new doctores receive an invitation to the ceremony.
Doctoral diploma and transcript
Candidates who have completed their defence receive one diploma and one transcript with a diploma supplement:
- A diploma with text in Latin (the ceremonial diploma). This is presented at the conferment ceremony. If you are unable to attend the ceremony, the diploma will be sent by regular mail to your home address after the ceremony.
- A transcript with text in English (or Norwegian, if you wrote your thesis in Norwegian) with a diploma supplement, for use in practical contexts. The transcript and diploma supplement are produced only in digital form, and you will have access to them via Vitnemålsportalen (vitnemalsportalen.no). You will be notified by the Faculty of Humanities when these documents have been produced and are available to you in the Diploma Registry.
Temporary documentation
If you need documentation of your completed doctoral degree before the faculty has issued the transcript, the faculty’s case officer can provide a brief confirmation letter. In such cases, you must contact the faculty yourself.
