About research stays abroad
An international track record will be crucial for future academic employment and for opportunities for external project funding.
Participation in external courses and conferences is also a key part of research training, where candidates can establish contacts and build networks.

Exchange agreements
Exchange agreements with other universities are designed for longer stays. They can usually be used both for research stays and courses, and often provide practical and financial advantages compared with ordinary visiting researcher stays.
Travel through Erasmus+
All PhD candidates can travel on student exchange through Erasmus+ and receive a grant on the same terms as other students.
The minimum duration of such stays is 3 months, and the faculty or department you are affiliated with must have an exchange agreement for PhD candidates with the host institution abroad.
If you are employed as a PhD candidate at UiO, you may also apply for Erasmus+ funding for a stay abroad to teach at another university, or for training or participation in courses.
How to apply for exchange
Application procedures for exchange may differ for PhD candidates compared with students at lower levels.
Contact the research administration at your department well in advance if you are considering making use of an exchange agreement.
