The course provided the students with a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience by participating in the upkeep of the Frygne burial ground in Nore and Uvdal municipality. During the course, the students were able to learn from and interact with several employees from Viken County Council and Nore and Uvdal municipality, gaining insight into their daily work and receiving comprehensive training and guidance in the maintenance of the burial ground, and they were also introduced to the use of drones.
Additionally, the students were able to expand their understanding of cultural heritage management by visiting various historic sites. After completing the maintenance work on the burial ground, the group visited Nore Stave Church before spending the night at Vasstulan, a location that featured a nearby mass-trapping system for reindeer and a replica of a trapping pit in the reception area. After dinner, the group took a walk to the mass-trapping system and the day ended with a lecture by Marie D. Amundsen on gold from the Migration period.
On the second day, the students were treated to lectures by Ola Rønne and Ole Christian Aslaksen of Viken County and Kirsti Otterholt of Nore and Uvdal municipality, before visiting an Iron Age iron extraction site in Smådøl and Kravik and observing several beautiful medieval buildings.
Overall, the course was a resounding success, and we thank Viken County and Nore and Uvdal municipality for their good cooperation and the archaeology students for a well-performed job!
