The aim of this paper is to analyze the objections against the notion of variable quantity presented by Cantor, Frege, and Bolzano and to frame this issue in the broader debate regarding the rigorization of analysis in the 19th century. In particular, we consider the problem of providing a rigorous way to define continuity without appealing to the traditional notion of a variable quantity.
