AssemblingLife Kick-Off Workshop: Philosophy of Self-Assembly and Self-Organisation in Living Systems, Oslo, 10-11 June, 2024
The AssemblingLife project organized a two-day kick-off workshop, bringing together leading experts from various fields including philosophy, cell biology, biophysics, and chemistry. Speakers included among others Julia Bursten, John Dupre, Harald A. Stenmark, Alvaro Moreno, Lee Cronin, James DiFrisco, and Andreas Carlson. This event explored the intricate processes of self-assembly and self-organization, delving into their pivotal role in understanding and explaining life. Mini-workshop: Local explanations and case-based reasoning, Rachel Ankeny and Robert Northcott, UiO, Aug 27, 2024
Rachel Ankeny and Robert Northcott presented their work on the role of cases in scientific reasoning. Ankeny discussed abduction based on medical cases while Northcott defended localism in causal explanations focusing on ecological cases. They both highlighted the significance of cases in the philosophy of science, inspiring a fruitful discussion, and calling for greater attention to their role in scientific inquiry. Project meeting and talk by Lauren Ross: Types of Causation in the Life Sciences, UiO, Sept. 2, 2024.
Lauren N. Ross visited AssemblingLife and the Centre for Philosophy and Sciences (CPS) in the beginning of September. Project members gave flash talks presenting project research to Ross receiving valuable feedback from her. After that, Ross gave a talk at the CPS Lunch Forum on different types of causation in life science. See here for more information on the talk.
