In this talk, Dr. Marianna Dudley will discuss her new book, which charts the rise of wind power in Britain. She'll argue that energy history offers more than a narrative of technological progress, and show how wind energy in particular reveals the varied, complex and interrelated ways in which ideas of place, power and politics have shaped the nation. This talk will critically engage with ideas of energy transition, and offer some ideas from the past to inform contemporary discussions around decarbonisation.
Marianna Dudley is an environmental historian at the University of Bristol. Her work explores environmental change and its impacts on communities, places and politics. She is the author of An Environmental History of the UK Defence Estate, 1945 - present. Electric Wind: An Energy History of Modern Britain is her second book.
