Crafting a clear presentation of one’s findings and argument takes time. What does one do when a sub-topic suddenly becomes so interesting that it topples the planned structure? How much empirical documentation is necessary, and how much is too much? How elaborately – and where – should one summarize the arguments of other scholars within one’s research field, or problematize and historicize the analytical concepts one employs? Virtually every scholar struggles with such questions when writing their first drafts, which is why it is often said that the best writing is rewriting.
This text development seminar welcomes chapter/article drafts in all stages of completion. Particular attention will be given to (re)structuring, and participants are encouraged to skim the chapter titled “Build an architecture” in William Germano’s book On Revision (University of Chicago Press, 2021) before the seminar.
Participants will have ten minutes to contextualize their own draft. After that, an assigned discussant will have ten minutes for commenting, before we move to a general discussion.
The duration of the seminar and the exact division of labour will depend on the number of presenters.
The texts will be circulated in advance to make sure that everyone gets a chance to read them.
Participation (presenting and commenting) yields: 2 ECTS.
We need at least two registered participants to run the seminar: one presenter and one commentator.
The seminar is capped at 8 participants.
