About the reading group

This month, we will be joined by researcher and lecturer Սերինա Թարխանիան (Serina Tarkhanian) to discuss the artistic research project, Healing Earths, that she is working on in collaboration with ceramic artist Corinne Aivazian. Some of the topics we will touch on in this discussion are:

  • Artistic research and creation, intersecting microbiology science and art around Armenian bole;
  • Design of scientific experiments to determine bactericidal or bacteriostatic effects of the bole, as part of the art-science collaboration at the Department of Molecular Sciences and Nanosystems of Ca’Foscari.
  • Creative research on and prototypes of “Armenian bole wine” made with sealed earth tablets and stored in կարաս (karas) wine vessels (large clay vessel traditionally used to store and ferment wine in Armenia).
  • Exploring a post-secular paradigm for more-than-human design and dealing with the incommensurability of microbiology and spirituality.

To prepare for the reading group, we encourage you to watch this 10-minute documentary on the project: https://vimeo.com/1035286568

The readings will be circulated via the SOILS e-mail listserve.
