In this reading group session we will read the speculative fiction published on Metode—“The Plow Forgets But the Land Remembers” a speculative design fiction and the designed artefact, a fictional Sadar (soil radar system) that explores a millennia long saga of exploration of deep soils under the surface of the Earth and beyond.

The sf story spanning a millennia follows the development of a designed object—a Sadar which enable mapping of deep soils and multi-species communication across space and time through over a millennium at the planetary scale and galactic scale.

The Reading Group is hybrid, so you can also join us on Zoom:

Jomy Joseph is a design researcher and sustainability scholar based in Oslo and is a Postdoctroral Fellow at IKOS with the Anthropogenic Soils (funded by the Norwegian Research Council) in collaboration with CoFutures (European Research Council) at IKOS, University of Oslo.

With over a decade of experience spanning industrial design, communication, visual design, user experience design, and speculative design, his research engages with themes of futures, long-term sustainability, technological disobedience, regenerative ecology, politics, and culture.

In practise, his work involves engaging with the material aspects of futures by designing objects and experiences that integrate industrial design with speculative fiction, future foresight & systemic design for long-term sustainability transitions.

In his current research on Soil CoFutures he is exploring the materialities and alternative futures that can help refuture human-soil relations for the long term.
