How to access the Socio-Cognitive Lab's hypatia

This text describes how to access the Socio-Cognitive Lab's storage on hypatia.

We recommend storing lab-related data on the Socio-Cognitive Lab's hypatia (= storage hotel). This is a UiO network-attached storage for housing large quantities of data, which is suitable for up to red data. It is familiar to many as it looks like a home drive (Windows File Explorer). It can be accessed from the UiO network or from UiO machines. Get in touch with lab manager Franziska Köder to be given access to the Socio-Cognitive Lab's hypatia.

How to access hypatia from UiO computer

Start File Explorer and type in \\hypatia.uio.no in the address line. Here you will find an overview of every folder on hypatia. You will only be able to access folders you have been granted access to. The folder for the Socio-Cognitive Lab is called "lh-hf-iln-sociocognitivelab", double-click that to get to the sub-folders. You can easily make a shortcut by dragging the folder onto your desktop. Here are direct paths to the lab's hypatia from the File Explorer:

  • PC: \\hypatia.uio.no\lh-hf-iln-sociocognitivelab
  • Linux/Mac: //hypatia.uio.no/lh-hf-iln-sociocognitivelab
  • NFS: /net/hypatia/uio/fs01/lh-hf-iln-sociocognitivelab

How to access hypatia from private computer and/or MAC

To access hypatia from a private computer and/or MAC you need to connect to UiO Programkiosk. This is a server that gives you access to UiO services and programs from outside UiO. Start your browser and go to UiO Programkiosk. You can log onto it directly from the website with Omnissa Horizon Client (click “Log on …” on the right side). For a more stable connection, we recommend that you install Omnissa on your computer.

On Omnissa Horizon Client, use the following path to access the lab's hypatia via File Explorer: \\hypatia.uio.no\lh-hf-iln-sociocognitivelab

How to access hypatia from lab pc

Access to hypatia is possible from the main lab pc (where files from AV system are sent to, called "small pc").

  1. Click on shortcut to hypatia on desktop. Log onto hypatia with your own UiO credentials (Username: username@uio.no + password). DO NOT CLICK: "Remember my credentials”.
  2. You have two options to get to lab’s folder “hf-iln-sociocognitive lab”. Either click on icon for lab's hypatia on desktop to directly get to target folder. Or navigate to hypatia folder in the overview of all storage hotel folders at UiO.
  3. Save files in correct place in hypatia (e.g., your project folder)
  4. Afterwards restart lab pc! – Otherwise next lab user can access to your project folder.

Folder structure and data flow

In the lab's hypatiam, you will find the folders "Durable", "Research", and "Students". They have different permissions depending on user groups.

''Durable'' (naming standard from TSD) is for storing the raw data. It is only the data managers who have full permissions here. You can read and download data, but not edit it. In order to get raw data stored, get in touch with the lab manager and agree on folder structure, naming conventions, and frequency of data transfer.

The folders ''Research'' and ''Students'' are where lab users have full access and can store, copy, and process data. The folder "Research" is for the storage of data by researchers, and the folder "Students" is specifically for storing data related to student projects. Lab users can create their own subfolders within these two main folders and are responsible for managing the internal folder structure and compliance with their data management plan.

Note that by default all lab users have access to the data stored in these folders. However, it is possible to apply for ''protected project folders'' that are only accessible to a specified subgroup of lab users, e.g., the project members. If you would like to request restricting access to a project folder, please fill in this form. Note that each new project member needs to be manually given access to the folder by the lab manager.
