SPEAKERS ECUADOR

I am the PI of SPEAKERS ECUADOR which is a 3-year project that complements the RCN-funded project Indigenous language resilience: From learners to speakers. SPEAKERS ECUADOR responded to an invitation from Kichwa educators to collaboratively develop culturally relevant didactic guidelines in Kichwa teacher preparation programs in Ecuador. SPEAKERS ECUADOR is a Participatory Action Research involving several Kichwa educators from different institutions in Ecuador. Many Kichwa pre-service teachers nowadays are mestizos and use Kichwa as their second or additional language. The deliverable of the SPEAKERS ECUADOR will assist Kichwa teacher educators to prepare adequately future Kichwa teachers, thus counteracting the dominance of Spanish language in the bilingual intercultural schools in Ecuador.

Academic interests and positioning

Participatory, multimodal and decolonial methodologies: language trajectory drawings, Participatory Action Research, auto/duo/collaborative ethnography, lifescapes.

Transdisciplinary: Exploring intersections of language teacher education, language reclamation, curriculum and instruction, and language policies.

My intellectual approach to educational research is southernizing, embedded in resisting western hegemony in the Global South.
