  The genre hybridity of Bergsveinn Birgisson’s book Den svarte vikingen is discussed in this article in the light of theories accentuating the significance of memory and oblivion for individual and collective identity. In reconstructing the forgotten or repressed story of the settler Geirmund Heljarskinn, Birgisson introduces his readers to a story different from the traditional Icelandic national narrative told by the authors of Landnámabók, Íslendingabók and the sagas. He presents his readers with the historical «other» within the Icelandic «self», thereby indirectly underlining that, since immigration is not a new phenomenon, nations were heterogeneous long before the creation of nation-states in the 19th century rectly underlining that, since immigration is not a new phenomenon, nations were heterogeneous long before the creation of nation-states in the 19th century.
