The genre hybridity of Bergsveinn Birgisson’s book Den svarte vikingen is discussed in this article in the light of theories accentuating the significance of memory and oblivion for individual and collective identity. In reconstructing the forgotten or repressed story of the settler Geirmund Heljarskinn, Birgisson introduces his readers to a story different from the traditional Icelandic national narrative told by the authors of Landnámabók, Íslendingabók and the sagas.
