PhD project

In my project I will investigate changes in the person-agreement systems in the Ovansiljan dialects, a group of dialects in Dalarna, Sweden. These dialects drew attention at the beginning of the 20th century for their archaic morphological systems, including person agreement well into modern times. During the last hundred years the local vernaculars have changed rapidly, including in their morphological systems. In this project, I will investigate these changes using updated data, and attempt to determine why they are occurring by viewing them in light of the sociolinguistic shifts in the region. The changes will also be compared with how person agreement was lost and changed in other Nordic varieties to see whether the course of change corresponds with or differs from those patterns.
