Academic interests
My research interests encompass the social aspects of language use, with a particular focus on Norwegian as a second language and other forms of multilingualism. I am especially interested in language attitudes, language ideologies, and how language use relates to identity, power, and social inequality.
My PhD project
My PhD project investigates how language use influences perceptions of professional credibility in Norwegian higher education. Norwegian universities and university colleges are tasked with both promoting Norwegian as a language of specialized knowledge and participating in international academic communities; this dual role can create tensions between Norwegian and English as languages of instruction. Focusing particularly on international academic staff, the project examines how students evaluate instructors' competence when teaching in Norwegian versus English, and how the instructors themselves experience linguistic expectations and professional identity. The study combines surveys, matched-guise tests, and focus group interviews across academic disciplines characterized by varying linguistic practices. The project is part of the Centre for the Use of Norwegian as an Academic Language (NORBRUK).
