About the project
Norchron will collect and digitize Old Norwegian texts across historical stages of the language (200–1814 CE) to create the first national comprehensive and searchable database.
This database will be used for research in linguistics, philology, history and archaeology while also making these documents available to a broader audience.
Norchron will include runic inscriptions, the canonical texts of Old Norwegian literature, diplomas, and texts written in Norwegian during the Danish period.
Included will be grammatical information useful for specialists. Word-by-word glosses to Modern Norwegian will make the material accessible to non-specialists.
Norchron upgrades previous databases which are scattered and at different stages of annotation and make them accessible in a single interface.
Purpose
Norchron will deliver four main outputs:
- A FAIR, searchable corpus accessible through the Glossa interface operated by UiO.
- A full-text collection allowing users to read entire texts.
- A resource containing information about the texts: dating, genre and metadata.
- A suite of visualisation tools and language technology resources for Old and Middle Norwegian, including neural language models.
All components will be integrated into a dedicated online portal. An educational package will also be offered to teachers, museum educators, and the general public interested in the topic.
