UiO's new research network Oil & Society is happy to announce its first gathering and pre-Christmas meeting. The network will meet to learn more about each other's ongoing research and to hear presentations about working communities in the oil industry.

The event will be held in English and is open to all.

The event program

1. Round of presentations: To get to know each other and get an overview of the topics that are being worked on in the network, everyone is welcome to spend 2-3 minutes presenting their own research interests and ongoing work, and how it relates to the network's theme.

2. Oil workers: Imagined communities and imaginaries of transition

  • Screening of the film "The Phase-Out Dilemma" (13 min), produced by the research project WAGE. In the film, oil workers from Norway and Nigeria discuss who should phase out their oil production first. Ahead of the film, researchers David Jordhus-Lier and Camilla Houeland will talk about how they have used the film medium to study oil workers' climate policy self-understanding.
  • Margrete Hestenes from the TOIL project (ILN) will talk about the imagined communities of oil workers from a musical perspective.

3. Plans and proposals for the network's further gatherings: What do we want to use the gatherings in the network for in 2025? Open discussion with suggestions for topics and ways to collaborate.

Email bard.lahn@tik.uio.no by December 9th if you wish to participate so that we can make sure there is enough gingerbread!

Welcome!
