Academic interests
I have a master’s degree in French language from the University of Oslo, where I wrote about the pronunciation of nasal vowels in the Paris region from a diachronic and sociophonetic perspective. I have worked mainly in the domain of French sociolinguistics, and particularly within sociophonetics. I am especially interested in field linguistics and experimental methods used to study sociolinguistic variation, linguistic change and language attitudes. Other interests include dialectology and lexicography, especially the intersection between these two fields, as well as historical linguistics. Previously, I have worked as a translator for various film and TV productions, as well as a teacher of Norwegian as a foreign language in Paris. I have also been a teaching assistant in French grammar and French phonetics and phonology at the University of Oslo.
My doctoral research project
In my research project, I am investigating linguistic attitudes towards a phonetic variable in spoken French. Thus far, the variable has received relatively little attention. Although the variable is now widespread in France, few studies have examined its use as socially marked, and apart from some indications that its use varies by gender (the data have so far been ambiguous), little is known about the significance of other extralinguistic factors. Through analyses of production data, perception data, and metalinguistic data from a sociolinguistic study in the Paris region, the goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of what this variable conveys in social interactions, and its role in communicative contexts.
