About the group

The research group works on language learning and writing development in English and other foreign languages taught in Norwegian schools.

An important part of the group’s work has been the development of the TRAWL corpus.

The TRAWL corpus

The TRAWL corpus is a longitudinal corpus consisting of authentic student writing from lower and upper secondary school, as well as English texts written by students in years 5–7 in primary school. The corpus also contains texts written in Norwegian, and thus represents all the main language subjects in Norwegian schools.

Many of the texts in the corpus are accessible to other researchers, teachers and teacher educators through the Glossa interface, developed by the Text Laboratory at the University of Oslo.

The research group is continuing its work on developing the corpus.

Research interests

Based on the TRAWL corpus, the group has conducted research on the development of vocabulary, morphosyntax, syntactic complexity, text structure, genre, and style in various language subjects.

We have also examined connections between Norwegian students' language learning and writing development in their first, second, and third languages.
